Horton Hears A Who
3 stars out of 5
A delightful little concoction of a film, with
Jim Carrey as Horton, Steve Carell as The Mayor of Whoville ,Carol Burnett as the bossy Kangaroo and a story by Dr. Seuss. I mean really, need I say more? Once again, the studio has no idea how to promote a film; the trailer and the advertising made this look like a stinker. It is in fact, charming, and despite the cliché, fun for the whole family. Deep? No. Breaking new ground? No. But Marlow may hit me with something if I go to one more CGI movie with her and point out how proud CGI animators are of the fact that they can animate water now, which they couldn't for a very long time. These are the guys who did Ice Age, and there's a sequel on the way according to a trailer. I can't wait for the return of the squirrel, the best thing in movies since Wile E. Coyote. They did another good job--in fact, a better job--here, at every level: character, animation and story. Of course, the story was handed to them.
Carrey's performance was unusually restrained, for him, as was Carrell's. And I must admit I was distracted by trying to figure out who the extremely familiar narrator was: veteran CBS newsman Charles Osgood. A good time was had by us both.
