Canny readers will have realized by now that I don't include all my daily activities in this blog; after all, it isn't Facebook ;-)
However, this week I needed to convert some text from the Internet into a form that was easily readable on my Sony ereader. I had been using AWS to convert my Microsoft Word Documents (.DOC) to the open electronic publication format (EPUB). Turns out, there IS a difference between converters. I was searching the Internet for advice on how to format a Microsoft document to produce a better ebook (and finding, essentially, no such advice), when I ran across Apose. Several Internet forum postings describe this as a Word Plug-in that required you have Microsoft's bloated and ridiculous .NET framework installed. It has metamorphesized into an application (and since I already have .NET installed, alas, I can't tell you if it is a prerequisite). In any case, it does a terrific job of taking an average not-too-formatted Word document and turning it into a very readable EPUB file. One piece of advice I had to dig to find; most converters, including the Apose, take the information for the "properties" tab of your word document to create the file name and author information that appears on the library screen of your reader. It has been years since I have even thought of, nonetheless opened this tab; in case you're not familiar with it, it is Properties under the File menu. Use the tab marked "summary" and fill in the Title and Author fields as you wish them to appear.
You're welcome.
