- Maybe many rich people are OK with paying higher taxes. People that I talk to (none of them remotely rich) think their taxes are too high. I tell them that it's their wages that are too low, not that taxes are too high. I think that many lower income people who vote republican think that half the federal budget is made up of foreign aid and welfare. When you come right down to it they don't want their hard-earned tax dollars going to anybody who is not like them.
