This and That

Adjective Order
You would never say, “look at the red, big dog.” Adjective Order is something you never think of, but almost never get wrong in your native language. In French for example, the phrase is cheval blanc (white horse, noun first) and petit chou (little cabbage, adjective first)… French adjective rules here.

Tuition Strike
Over 1,100 undergraduate and graduate students at Columbia University have pledged to withhold their tuition for the spring semester to demand a discount for what they see as a lost spring term.

East/West 3
In addition to prevailing winds, my friend Reid Ashe pointed out another factor which favors residency of working people on the east side of any town: “Add Wichita, Kansas, where I lived for 10 years. On the flat, treeless prairie, it was said the commute to work favored living on the east side, so the sun would be at your back instead of your face.” Also true.

Hal Holbrook
I note with sadness the passing of Hal Holbrook. His portrayal of Mark Twain was amazing and impressive, and was my Sunday-morning go to when I was a DJ at KVAN. His performances were fitting tributes to a great author by a great actor.
