It’s too bad I am married to the aphorism at the top of this column (after a half century); otherwise, I’d use this one, the epigraph of End Is Her, the last of H. Claire Taylor’s Jessica Christ novels(an excellent series of comic novels, by the way): “Everything that needs to be said has already been said. But since no one was listening, everything must be said again.”
Original French, literal translation:
Toutes choses sont dites déjà; mais comme personne n'écoute, il faut toujours recommencer.
- Everything has been said before, but since nobody listens we have to keep going back and beginning all over again.
- Le Traité du Narcisse (The Treatise of the Narcissus)
―André Gide
