Another half-day shot. My mind wandered back to the fight song at my high school, Benson Polytechnic School in Portland, Oregon (a public school started with a bequest from millionaire lumberman/philanthropist Simon Benson). Imagine my surprise when I couldn’t find the lyrics anywhere. I knew the Benson song was based on a college fight song, but I couldn’t remember which one.
By investing way more time than the subject deserved, I discovered that Benson’s song uses the tune and many of the lyrics of the Washington State fight song.
Here’s the original:
Fight, fight, fight for Washington State!
Win the victory,
Win the day for Crimson and Gray!
Best in the West
We know you'll all do your best,
So on, on, on, on!
Fight to the end!
Honor and glory you must win!
So fight, fight, fight for Washington State and Victory!
Here is the Benson version:
Fight, fight, fight for old Benson Tech!
On to victory.
We’ll all be true to the Orange and Blue,
Best in the West
We know you'll all do your best.
So on, on, on, on!
Fight to the end!
Glory and Honor you will seek!
So fight, fight, fight for Old Benson Tech and Victory!
